THIRD SPACE* Studio is an art and research-led interdisciplinary architecture practice. We establish our theoretical standpoint amongst our post-modern and post-colonial predecessors, as one of dialogue, mediation and hybridity.

Research supervised by Becky Sobell at the Manchester School of Architecture Atelier: Some Kinds of Nature.

This project addressed how the architectural process can decenter humans entirely from  the design process. By using an understanding of a non-human species, existing landscapes are manipulated to better integrate non-human actors.

The urban fox stands as one of the most significant and contentious species within the United Kingdom, evoking both aversion and affection among the populace. The proliferation of urban foxes in major cities has engendered a fascinating, albeit polarizing, discourse. Despite their remarkable adaptability, seamlessly inhabiting both urban and natural habitats, humans have yet to fully reconcile with their coexistence, leading to the perpetuation of certain stereotypes.

This approach seeks to confront the discomfort associated with unwelcome fauna, specifically the fox, by placing them at the forefront of our efforts. By doing so, this research aimed to foster acceptance and dispel prevailing stereotypes. Through this shift in public perception towards unwanted species, this project endeavors to gradually integrate these creatures into the fabric of urban environments, thereby inching closer to mitigating the climate crisis.
A pivotal design methodology employed in this endeavor is 'Animal Aided Design.' This method entails designing spaces tailored to the unique needs, vulnerabilities, and behaviors of a particular species. Through such an approach, we explore avenues to augment biodiversity within the urban landscape of Stockport, Manchester.
