Conceived as a deliberate architectural hybridisation, Bayt al-Mahār mediates the structural typologies of the Bayt al-sha’ar (house of hair) and the dhow to interrogate the indigenous architectural vernaculars of the UAE. By synthesising these forms, THIRD SPACE Studio* and Megan Cope reflect on the deep-time nature of form and and the region's cultural continuum.
The work’s materiality - defined by its mobility and structural lightness - honours the technological resilience inherent in indigenous spatial practices. It offers a semiotic bridge between Bedouin terrestrial adaptability and maritime historicity, mapping the evolution of identities, economies and knowledge systems embedded within the contemporary Emirati landscape.
